Bellingrath Gardens
The Bellingrath Gardens were created by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bellingrath and were opened to the public for the first time in 1932. They are situated near Mobile, Alabama. The gardens are still open to the public today and throughout the year there are many plants on display on the 65 acre property, from azaleas, to roses and camellias. However, the garden not only consists of plants and flowers, but also a lake, boardwalk, large lawn, butterfly garden and formal terrace gardens.
The Bellingrath Home is also open to the public and displays original furnishings and Mrs. Bellingrath's large collection collection of decorative arts. The 15-room home was designed by a local architect and built in 1935. An adjoining guest house and garage was built in 1939, and since 1967 has housed a large porcelain collection.
Miss Maudie refers to Mr. and Mrs. Bellingrath and their garden in To Kill A Mockingbird. She says "Those Bellingraths’ll look plain puny when I get started!" She means that once she has rebuilt a smaller house for herself to live in, she will have a larger garden to plant many beautiful flowers and plants. She thinks that once she has planted everything, her garden will be much better than the Bellingrath's garden. This statement shows how committed Miss Maudie is to her plants and how much she enjoys gardening. She also enjoys a challenge and never gives up hope. She always finds something positive in the worst events.
